Miss Wenman's Last Week

 Dear Families,

This week is my last week in Mrs. Servais' classroom. I wish I could stay all year, but I  have to go to a new school.  I have had a wonderful time with this class and each and every child in our class has made an impact on my life.  I have learned a lot from them and will miss them all.  My last day will be on Friday, November 9th. Thank you for making this experience the best it could be!

Love,

Miss Wenman

Rainbows

The World Is A Rainbow
To introduce rainbows we made a rainbow from outlines of our hands.  Each student cut out the outline of his or her hand.  Today we also learned about the colors in the rainbow.  We remember the colors of the rainbow by knowing the name Roy G. Biv.  <---- Click on the link to find a fun song we heard in class today to learn about Roy G. Biv.  The beginning of each letter of the colors in the rainbow, make up the name Roy G. Biv.  We had a blast making our own Roy G. Biv man. (shown in the picture below the rainbow.

Daily Five

Daily Five is new to our classroom this year.  Students get to choose from Read to Self, Listen to Reading, Word Work, Work on Writing, and Read to Someone.  In our classroom, we are doing three rotations per day.  Students are to choose a different station each rotation, until they have gone to every station.  During this time, the teacher is meeting with students in small groups.

These two students have selected Read to Someone.  At this time they are taught to sit side by side and take turns reading to each other.

This student has chosen Write to Self.  Here, students are allowed to write about anything they want.  Students can finish entries in their writing journals or they can use writing paper in the back of the room.
This is our writing center where students who have chosen Write to Self can write.  When they are finished, they put their paper in their writing journals until the student meets with the teacher to talk about and share his or her writing samples. It is a great way to learn about the students!

Short "u" Word Family Umbrellas

Last week we reviewed the short "u" sound.  The students had fun making these word umbrellas.  At the top of the umbrella the students wrote the word wall words for this week.  The students then wrote short "u" words on the raindrops.  The letters are written on both sides of the raindrops to create four words.  Two in each word family.

Westby Homecoming

We had a great time dressing up for homecoming and walking in the parade! Our first graders had a lot of school spirit and chanted "Here we go Westby, here we go!" the whole way.

Westby Elementary at the Vernon County Fair

Our school, Westby Elementary, won "Best in Show" at the fair for our fair panels. The students in the first grade made raccoons for our fair panels, after reading the book The Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn.
Above is a picture of our plaque we won for "Best of Show".

Writing with Shaving Cream

This afternoon, after Mr. Pederson read us the book, The Dot By: Peter H. Reynolds.  We practice writing letters in shaving cream.  We focused mostly on the letters that have lines going from top to bottom and from left to right. Here are some pictures of the fun we had while learning and practicing letters!
